Chapter Eighteen

I was wrong. Abby didn’t stay over at our house for the weekend. Wendy’s mom said it was okay for her to have a sleepover with the girls from the swim team, so Abby wanted us to go there instead. I don’t know all of the girls as well as I know Abby, Wendy, and Brittney. Dad was worried about me going. Mom had already left for work so the decision was up to Dad. Whining and begging, Abby said, “Please, Papa Cooper. I promise to look out for her Superdad style. I promise I’ll beat the shit out of anybody if they say anything or do anything wrong. It’s just a sleepover. I promise!”

Dad laughed at her. He was probably thinking about freshman year when she hit that boy. I typed, “Please, Dad.” It wasn’t that I wanted to go. To be honest I was worried. I don’t like going to parties. I never have, ever since I was a little girl and the fog was worse. Too many people talking too loud can cause the fog to come crashing in hard and fast, losing control at a party was and is too easy. I could and would take my headphones but if I sat in a corner listening to music all night what would be the point in going in the first place. But, Abby wanted me to go, so I wanted to go. She’s always had that kind of influence on me. She makes me feel like I don’t have the fog sometimes, like I’m not some freak, like I am a normal girl with a friend, a girl who goes to sleepovers. So I typed again, “Please, Dad.”

He shook his head, but said, “Fine, just make sure you take your pills and get some sleep. Don’t stay up all night, and you,” he pointed at Abby, “make sure she takes her pills and doesn’t stay up all night.”

“Yeah, yeah,” we both said at the same time and laughed.

Wendy’s house was a lot bigger than my house. She had a bedroom the size of my living room. I like my smaller rooms. The big rooms made me feel like I was at school, or a museum, or someplace else people are only supposed to visit, but not live in. All the girls from the swim team were there and a few more too. There were a lot of girls I didn’t know. I wanted to leave the second I realized how many people really were there, hiding in different rooms, playing loud music, kissing and hugging. There were a lot of boys there too. I didn’t see Wendy’s mom or dad anywhere. I pulled on Abby’s arm and typed, “I thought this was a sleepover?”

“It is, Megan. We’re going to sleep here … but it’s more like a party than a sleepover,” she said. “Don’t worry, if you need to go outside or something to get a break just let me know and I’ll go with you.
